Integrated offshore grid solutions combine cross-border electricity transmission lines with offshore wind farm connections. In the context of the EU-funded NorthSeaGrid project, costs and benefits of such integrated solutions have been quantified for 3 cases: the German bight, UK-Benelux and UK-Norway.
At this side event, the main project results will be presented. The study shows that for these three cases, an integrated approach is more beneficial than an uncoordinated one where transmission lines and offshore wind farm connections would not be planned separately. However, costs and benefits are distributed asymmetrically between participating countries and stakeholders. Therefore, different cost-benefit allocation mechanisms have been examined, which could be the basis for bilateral or trilateral talks between affected countries.
