Comparison exercises

As a service to its members and the community at large, WindEurope is hosting comparison exercises that aim to provide the industry with better modelling methodologies and tools, share experience and move towards best practice for the industry.

Since 2011, four exercises have been run on comparing resource and energy yield assessment procedures with a total of 130 teams taking part. The first two exercises focused on onshore, the third and fourth ones on offshore.

The first mesoscale modelling benchmarking exercise was run in 2015.

WindEurope would like to thank the partners organisations for their significant input, without which these exercises would not be possible. WindEurope acts as a neutral platform and a facilitator by co-ordinating, hosting and promoting the exercises and organising events at which the results are presented. The exercises are organised on a non-commercial basis.

Sound Propagation International Comparison Exercise (SPICE)

WindEurope plans to run a Sound Propagation International Comparison Exercise.

Results will be presented at WindEurope's technology workshop Wind Turbine Sound 2016, in Gdansk, Poland on 17-18 November 2016.

A general concept of the exercise was presented at WindEurope's technology workshop Wind Turbine Sound 2014, in Malmö, on 10 December 2014.

Recap of comparison exercises at EWEA 2015

DTU's Niels Gylling Mortensen looked back at all past CREYAP exercises and set out the way forward in "Comparison of Resource and Energy Yield Assessment Procedures 2011-15: what have we learned and what needs to be done?" and Bjarke Tobias Olsen gave a presentation on "Simulating wind energy resources with mesoscale models: Intercomparison of state-of-the-art models" which drew on additional submissions for the mesoscale benchmarking exercise.

Both presentations were given in session "Annual energy production: let's get in right!" on Wednesday 18 November (17.00-18.30).

Mesoscale Models Benchmarking Exercise

WindEurope ran a Mesoscale Models Benchmarking Exercise in 2015.

Information about the exercise, how to take part and access the datapack is available on this page.

Initial results were presented at WindEurope Technology Workshop Resource Assessment 2015. A full transcript as well as edited minutes of the discussion of the results are now available.

Extended results were presented at EWEA 2015 in Paris on 18 November 2015.

Offshore CREYAP part II

WindEurope ran a second Offshore CREYAP in early 2015. The submission deadline was February 2015. Essential results were presented at EWEA Offshore 2015 in Copenhagen and a more in-depth presentation of results with a specific focus on wakes was given at WindEurope technology workshop Resource Assessment 2015.

Information about the exercise, how to access the datapack is available on this page.
