12.06.2007

Brussels, June 12 - Please join us in witnessing a world premiere: for the first time in history a wind turbine will be installed in the heart of Brussels. The centerpiece of the European Wind Day, a full-size, 25 m wind turbine, is to be erected on Thursday 14 June from 5PM at the Schuman roundabout in Brussels. You are welcome to attend this special moment, which will reinforce the fact that Europeans are now embracing wind energy as never before.

Organised by the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA), the European Wind Day is a continent-wide celebration of wind power with more than 60 events planned in 21 European countries. The festivities will be officially launched at the Brussels press conference, to be held on-site in a VIP tent at the Schuman roundabout, on Friday, 15 June at 12:30. Presentations will be made by the following high level politicians and officials:

  • Andris Piebalgs, Commissioner for Energy – European Commission
  • Evelyne Huytebroeck, Energy and Environment Minister – Brussels region
  • Kris Peeters, Energy and Environment Minister – Flemish region
  • André Antoine, Minister for Energy, Transport, and Territorial Development, Walloon region
  • Philippe Van Troeye, General Manager Generation Electrabel
  • Christian Kjaer, CEO - European Wind Energy Association

The European Wind Day’s festivities in Brussels will conclude with a lively street party, featuring live DJ’s, a spectacular light show and other special events.  Admission is free with large number of people expected to attend.  The event is carbon-neutral and aims to promote the power of wind energy as a clean, indigenous, popular, efficient and reliable solution to the global climate crisis.
