15 June: European Wind Day – World Première in Brussels!

06.06.2007

The first ever pan-European campaign for the promotion of wind energy. On 15 June 2007, we will celebrate the power of wind across Europe

On 15 June 2007 you are invited to participate in the first ever pan-European campaign for the promotion of wind energy. From all corners of Europe, wind energy associations, manufacturers, producers, and other stakeholders will celebrate the power of wind through participation in a wide range of activities. Organised and coordinated by the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA), the European Wind Day aims to increase awareness among decision-makers and the public on the power, potential, and effectiveness of wind energy.

On 15 June, the European Wind Day will be celebrated across the continent. More than 60 ‘wind events’ will take place in 21 different countries. Join us to celebrate the power of the wind! In addition to the events planned in major European cities, wind farms Europe-wide will be open to the public and will host families, policy- makers, journalists, and all those interested in understanding how the power of wind is harnessed to become clean electricity.

In Brussels at the centre of the EU, EWEA will erect and exhibit a real size wind turbine right in the heart of the downtown core, on the Schuman roundabout. This is a world première! At 12:30, a press conference with high level speakers will officially launch the European Wind Day. At the end of the press conference, EWEA will also launch the first pan-European wind photo contest in collaboration with Photo, the world’s most popular photo magazine. The contest results will be announced in September. The action-packed day will close with an outdoor wind power party complete with a spectacular light show and live dj’s and music.

The recent decision taken by European Heads of State to endorse a 20% binding target for renewable energies is a first step in the right direction. If followed by effective implementation in the near future, this policy direction will ensure that Europe has a real opportunity to exploit the vast potential of wind energy as a secure, indigenous, clean and infinite energy source.

The European Wind Day is a Europe-wide event that will:

  • Promote the power of wind across Europe as a popular and effective energy source
  • Explain how wind energy is a key solution to the energy and climate crisis
  • Explain why wind energy can be the main contributor to the 20% binding target
  • Encourage European citizens to sign up for green electricity through the “plug into wind” campaign

By clicking on http://www.windday.eu/index.php?id=682 campaign supporters will be able to send an electronic postcard with the “plug into wind” message. The powerful visual representation, that of plugs suspended from the sky and swaying in the wind, compels European citizens to switch to green electricity and, if this option is not available, to ask their electricity providers to provide it.
