EWEA Anniversary: “25 Years – Powering Change”

08.02.2007

In 2007, the European Wind Energy Association will celebrate its 25th anniversary. This coincides with a growing recognition of the importance and success of wind energy at both a European and global level.

EWEA has decided to mark this event by adopting a new strapline, 25 years - powering change, which we believe aptly reflects our past achievements and future objectives.

Over the past decade, there has been a significant shift in the way power production and energy resources are viewed. Political decision-makers, industry experts and the public at large have had to accept the urgent need for change, in order to reduce pollution and climate change and to preserve energy resources.

Twenty five years ago, EWEA took on the challenge of promoting wind energy and has become the driving force behind the development of a sustainable energy supply. The road to this achievement has been long, and has required a great deal of research, learning and development, as well as a passion for the cause.

At the end of the 1970s, when the wind energy industry’s bi-monthly magazine Wind Directions was first published, it was hoped that it would become a forum for the exchange of ideas and information on wind power. When EWEA was established in September 1982, its main goals, “to raise the level of cooperation between Europe’s wind power organisations and spur an international awareness of the potential of wind energy”, were set out on the pages of this magazine, which has now become the flagship publication for the wind energy sector.

As a result of 25 years of intense activity, we have now become the world’s most powerful voice in wind energy. Representing more than 300 associations, companies and research institutions, we promote their interests in Europe and worldwide. EWEA is also a founding member of the Global Wind Energy Council and the European Renewable Energy Council. We currently share an office in Brussels with these organisations, which is powered solely by renewable energy.

In the context of the looming energy and climate crisis, EWEA is developing and implementing common strategies for the promotion of wind power. As well as managing various European projects, hosting events and supporting the needs of our members, we also work closely with the main European institutions to ensure a stable regulatory framework and boost research in favour of wind energy.

At this time, key decisions need to be taken that will have enormous impact on our energy future. EWEA is powering change to ensure that wind energy will be the leading technology in transforming the global energy supply structure towards a truly sustainable energy future, based on unlimited, non-polluting and competitive renewable technologies.

To celebrate its anniversary with all its members, EWEA will be holding a birthday party on 26 September in Brussels.
