Security of energy supply: offshore wind can be the answer to energy crunch

27.09.2004

Europe's energy imports are set to rise from 50% to 70% in the next two decades, demand for oil and gas is increasing worldwide and at the same time supply is constrained. Industry estimates from the European Wind Energy Association, EWEA, show that a sea area of 150,000 square kilometres with a water depth of less than 35 metres for offshore wind could provide enough power to satisfy all of Europe's electricity demand. The offshore wind power industry has the potential of developing into an industry of the same size as the offshore oil and gas sector.
