EWEA European Offshore Statistics 2015

February 2016

3,018.5 MW of new offshore wind power capacity was connected to the grid during 2015 in Europe, a 108.3% increase over 2014 and the biggest yearly addition to capacity to date.

  • 419 new turbines were erected in 2015. Seven turbines were decommissioned in the UK and Sweden, resulting in a net addition of 412 turbines.
  • 53 of these turbines equivalent to 277 MW are awaiting grid connection.
  • 14 projects were completed in 2015. Work is on-going on six projects in Germany, the Netherlands and the UK.

EWEA European Offshore Statistics - 1st half 2015

July 2015

In the first six months of 2015, Europe fully grid connected 584 commercial offshore wind turbines, with a combined capacity totalling 2,342.9 MW. Overall, 15 commercial wind farms were under construction. Once completed, these wind farms will have a total capacity of over 4,268.5 MW.

January 2015

In 2014, Europe fully grid connected 408 offshore wind turbines in nine wind farms and one demonstration project with a combined capacity totalling 1,483 MW. 536 turbines were erected during 2014. 2,488 turbines are now installed and grid connected, making a cumulative total of 8,045.3 MW in 74 wind farms in 11 European countries. Once completed, the 12 offshore projects currently under construction will increase installed capacity by a further 2.9 GW, bringing the cumulative capacity in Europe to 10.9 GW.

July 2014

In the first six months of 2014, Europe fully grid connected 224 offshore wind turbines in 16 commercial wind farms and one offshore demonstration site with a combined capacity totalling 781 MW. There are 310 wind turbines awaiting grid connection. Once connected, these will add a total capacity of over 1,200 MW. The total capacity of all the wind farms under construction is over 4,900 MW when fully commissioned.

January 2014

418 offshore turbines came online in 2013 in Europe, making a record 1,567 Megawatts (MW) of new capacity. This is one-third more than the capacity installed in 2012. This makes a new total of 6,562 MW of offshore wind power - enough to provide 0.7% of the EU's electricity.

July 2013

277 new offshore wind turbines, totalling 1,045 megawatts (MW), were fully grid connected in Europe during the first six months of 2013. This is double compared to the same period in 2012 when 523.2 MW were installed. In addition, 268 foundations were installed and 254 turbines erected, all during the first 181 days of the year.

January 2013

Europe installed and grid connected 293 offshore wind turbines in 2012 - more than one per working day. This brings the total to 1,662 turbines, in 55 offshore wind farms in ten European countries.

July 2012

132 new offshore wind turbines, totalling 523.2 megawatts (MW) were fully grid connected in Europe in the first six months of 2012. This is a 50% increase compared to the same period in 2011 when 348.1 MW were installed.

2011 was a stable year for the offshore wind industry with 235 new offshore wind turbines grid connected, worth approximately 2.4 billion Euros.

101 new offshore wind turbines were fully grid connected in the first six months of 2011, totalling 348.1 MW. Overall, 11 offshore wind farms were under construction.

January 2011

308 new offshore wind turbines, worth some €2.6 billion, were fully grid connected between 1 January and 31 December 2010, totalling 883 MW – a 51% increase on the previous year.

July 2010

In the first six months of 2010, 118 offshore wind turbines were fully grid connected totalling 333 MW.This takes the total installed offshore wind power capacity to 2,396 MW as of 30 June 2010. Overall 16 offshore wind farms totalling 3,972 MW were under construction.
