Mr. Carroll has been working in the Wind Industry for 5 years. He is currently a PhD student at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland. He has completed a Bachelors in Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering in Ireland and a Masters in Technical Management in Germany. He has held a wind and site position with SoWiTec, a developer in Latin America. He has also worked as a performance engineer with a leading manufacturer in their turbine performance department. His research is focused on improving the CoE through the selection of the most appropriate turbine design and its maintenance and operations strategy.

Abstract

Offshore availability with condition based maintenance strategy vs time based maintenance strategy

Introduction

This paper describes the condition monitoring systems (CMS) available for offshore wind farms. It details how CMS can be used in condition based maintenance (CBM) strategies. It also discusses the theoretical and modelled advantages of using CBM strategies over time based maintenance (TBM) strategies described in other papers. Finally it provides and compares the results from an empirical availability analysis on a number of offshore wind farms that use condition based maintenance (CBM) strategies and time based maintenance (TBM) strategies. These results are then used to validate the theoretical/modelled advantages of CBM strategies described in the other papers.

Approach

The following steps describe the approach taken to complete this paper:

1. Literature review was carried out on:
- The different condition monitoring systems available for offshore wind turbines
- Time and condition based maintenance strategies and their benefits

2. Availability data was obtained from an industrial partner for offshore wind turbines that use both CBM strategies and TBM strategies.

3. Sites with similar site conditions that use different maintenance strategies were chosen for an availability analysis to be carried out.


Main body of abstract

The novelty in this work is the empirical comparison of availability from different offshore O&M strategies. As this paper focuses on O&M strategies and their availability improvements for offshore wind farms, it is felt that the content of this paper is suitable for the “supply chain, logistics and O&M” track answering the track question “where in O&M can cost savings be found”.

Condition monitoring systems: In the paper this section details the condition monitoring systems available for offshore wind turbines, the components they monitor and their advantages and disadvantages.

Time Based Maintenance Strategy: This section of the paper provides an overview of TBM.

Condition Based Maintenance Strategy: This section of the paper provides an overview of CBM and looks at the reported advantages and disadvantages of this system from other papers.

Availability of TBM wind farms: This section of the paper shows the results of the availability analysis on offshore wind turbines that use a TBM strategy.

Availability of CBM wind farms: This section of the paper shows the results of the availability analysis for wind turbines that use a CBM strategy.

Comparison and Discussion: This section of the paper compares the results of both condition based and time based maintenance strategies, it also looks at validating the CMS advantage and disadvantage claims made in the other CMS papers discussed in the literature review.


Conclusion

Based on an empirical availability analysis this paper concludes that wind farms that use CBM strategies show higher availability overall. The exact difference in availability varies from turbine to turbine and may even show TBM having greater availability on individual turbines, however when a park is taken as a whole availability improvements of 0.1 - 1.5 % are seen. The paper also shows that the condition monitoring of the drive train is the system that shows the greatest improvement in availability.
