Air navigation safety group seeks guidance on the impact of wind turbines on radar surveillance

20.08.2009

Eurocontrol, the European organisation for the safety of air navigation, is in the process of evaluating submissions which may produce common guidelines to both the wind power industry and radar operators.

On 25 June, Eurocontrol produced a draft document called “Guidelines on how to assess the potential impact of wind turbines on surveillance sensors”.

The group – which is composed of both civil and military air traffic authorities – set up a working group in 2005 to look at the impact of wind turbines on surveillance radar. The objective of this group was to come up with guidelines that could be easily applied across Europe when air traffic authorities have to pronounce themselves on the possibility of authorising a wind farm near a radar installation.

The objectives of Eurocontrol’s consultation are to publicise the availability of the draft guidelines document, provide a formal method of submitting comments and observations, reconcile observations so as to improve the document, and to publish common guidelines.

The consultation opened on 25 June and closes on 29 January, 2010. EWEA is currently preparing a submission – if you would like to be involved, please contact Jacopo Moccia at [email protected].

Eurocontrol may organise a further workshop in November.

The draft document and the template for submitting comments will be available on Eurocontrol’s website: www.eurocontrol.int.
